The business was founded by the late Mr James Whitaker in quite a small way but became a landmark of excellence for miles around, it was offered rent free to Mr Whitaker for 12 months as no tenant had made it a profitable concern for over 20 years. The business was named James Whitakers & Sons Ltd and became prosperous, well organised and efficient as the demand for horticultural produce increased. The enterprising firm of nurserymen catered for the requirements of the fruit, flower and vegetable trade in several large towns in Lancashire.

The firm cultivated around 50 acres of land, a large proportion devoted to greenhouse cultivation, they were mostly devoted to the cultivation of cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce. The vast quantities were despatched to the big markets in Liverpool, Manchester, Wigan and Sheffield, the firm established connection with leading greengrocers in those towns.

In addition James Whitaker & Sons cultivated ferns, a wide variety of shrubs, trees and plants which were also supplied to retailers in various parts of the country. The trade was mostly wholesale but the quality of their produce made their name familiar to members of the public over a very wide area. They employed many people throughout the years, both men and women who were well trained and experienced. The firm had a fleet of at the time up to date motor vans which were kept in first class condition, they ran daily to the principal distributing centres and where familiar sight in Prescot.
